Creating a Serene Home
An Invitation to Comfort

Include all 5 senses while making a home, doing so provides safe haven for your evolving body and soul.
Your home is your oasis. Through your efforts, your house or apartment can become both a private sanctuary and a welcoming, serene, and healthy place to live in and visit. An organized and comfortable home can have a calming effect on you, your family, and guests, as well as be your personal escape from the rest of the world. Creating this nurturing space isn’t difficult. Even a household that includes young children or multiple animals can be a serene and peaceful place. In just a few minutes, you can make a number of changes that can turn your home into a safe and comfortable haven that you can be proud to share with your loved ones and friends. One way to fill your house or apartment with calming energy is to imbue it with a peaceful ambiance that nurtures all five senses. Soft lighting and soothing colors like blue, purple, and green can make a space feel warm and inviting, while pleasant and calming aromas such as lavender and vanilla can positively affect moods. Peaceful sounds, such as running water in a fountain or gentle chimes can uplift and clear the space, while clearing clutter and making the most of open space can ease internal turmoil and dispel negative feelings. The physical objects in your home as well as your home itself can retain the energy of previous owners or creators. You can give your household’s energy a lift by visualizing white light surrounding our home, symbolically sweeping out residual energy, or smudging your home with cleansing sage.
The changes you make to your home can be as unique as you are and may involve utilization of space, lighting, new furniture, decorating, feng shui, or ritual. But what you do is not as important as being clear in your intention to set up your household as a soothing and refreshing place to be. Make your home a place of comfort, and you will feel nurtured and cared for whenever you are there.

Tips on keeping your dog calm this Halloween… :)
SGC Admin: Halloween is a fun time, where things out of the ordinary are going on… :) However, for some of our furry family member’s it can be as scary as a thunder-storm…
Check out the following tips on keeping your furry family member feeling as safe and loved as he/she truly is on this coming “All Hallow’s Eve”… :)

- Don’t force fluffy to face her fear, if she wants to run and hide that’s o.k..
- Don’t get yourself all in a tizzy, it will only make fluffy worse… speak calmly and reassure her all is well.
- If you have a t-shirt handy for Chester, put it on him, it might just give him the sense of security he needs
- This could be the perfect time to go over some of those tricks you have been teaching Chester, it will get his mind off all of the noise and the reward of his absolutely favorite treat is sure to distract him…
- Pop on some classical music, or give furry filly a tummy massage, :) everyone will be feeling relaxed in no time.

SGC Admin: From our inbox to you: From The Whitby Library… What’s on for November…
Join us in November when we delve into mysteries, both real and imagined.
On Thursday, November 12 at 7:00 pm, we welcome Whitby’s Station Gallery Curator Olex Wlasenko as he teams up with our Archivist, Sarah Ferencz, to examine The Curious and Unsolved Case of Billy P. Stone, a 100-year-old unsolved Whitby murder.
Keeping the theme local, we are excited to host An Evening with Steve Burrows on Wednesday, November 18 at 7:00 pm. Burrows’ first novel, A Siege of Bitterns, won an Arthur Ellis Award from the Canadian Crime Writers Association. A Pitying of Doves, the second book in his birder murder mysteries series featuring police inspector Domenic Jejeune, was released earlier this year.
Registration is required for both programs. Register for The Curious and Unsolved Case of Billy P. Stone and An Evening with Steve Burrows online or by contacting any branch.
We want to hear from you! Give us your feedback on library services, facilities, resources and programs and you could win a Whitby prize pack!
The survey is available online and paper copies are available at all public service desks until November 30. The survey only takes about 5 to 7 minutes to complete and will provide us with valuable information as we plan for the future.
