Welcome Springtime!!!
Sensitivity Testing for Pollen/Dust/Mold
Those of you who have suffered in the past with environmental allergies, it is not too soon to start testing and working on getting your body ready for the spring allergy season. I am in the Whitby office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Don’t wait until you start to feel the symptoms. Enjoy this spring & summer symptom free! Remember, if you have pollen allergies you may also have food allergies and vice versa.
One of the first triggers of seasonal allergies is snow mold.
Chemical Allergies
We live in a world of continual environmental change. Most everything we come in contact with or eat contains some kind of chemical additive. Toxic and allergic chemicals are in the air and water. Many people end up at the Doctors with undiagnosed symptoms. Usually treated with some form of medication (eg.anti-depressants), when the cause could be an environmental hazard like coffee or cigarettes.
Food Additives
Most additives have the potential to cause toxic and allergic reactions. Over 90% of foods at the grocery store contain some kind of additive. The average person consuming more than 10 -15 pounds of food additives per year.
Some of these additives may have the ability to change the digestive process and cause damage to the intestinal lining.
Chemical sensitivity can produce ANY symptom in any person, at any given time. The same chemical may cause headache in one person, and joint pain in another.
Top Four Food Additives
Sulfites
Used as preservative to keep foods from turning brown (wine, beer, citrus drinks, potato chips, dried fruit, frozen items)
Yellow Dye#5
Most food dyes are known carcinogens. It is a synthetic dye derived from coal tar. It is a causative agent in bronchial asthma. Found in cheese, cake mixes, canned vegetables, chewing gum, fruit juice, puddings, salad dressings, ice cream, jams, ketchup, baked goods, wine coolers, liqueurs and much more.
BHA/BHT
Both are preservatives. Mostly found in cereals, baked goods, frozen dinners, fruit drinks, chewing gum. BHA/BHT may affect the nervous system and are known to cause behavioral problems in children. BHT has been banned from all foods in England.
MSG
Used as a flavour enhancer. Occurs in large amounts in food. Many restaurants use MSG, especially fast food. MSG causes headaches, diarrhea, blurred vision, fatigue, hot flashes, numbness of the face, sweating, and palpitations. Prolonged exposure may cause brain damage. Children are very sensitive to MSG. Other names for MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, hydrolyzed yeast, vegetable powder, or natural flavours.
As part of the food sensitivity testing that I conduct, I always test for food additives. Food additives play a large role in many unexplained symptoms. Children especially, behavioral issues are frequently caused by a high sensitivity to food additives and sugars.
It is so important to read the labels on the foods you are buying.
If you don’t like reading labels, then buy food without labels!
