Eco Friendly ideas for Earth day and everyday…..

April 22 is fast approaching. This is Earth Day, celebrated by many by cleaning up parks and neighbourhoods from the debris left over after the winter.

Spring is a fabulous time of year, with sprouts coming up and buds popping out on the trees, but it is also an untidy time of the year as we see the garbage that has been blown about and left unattended over the winter months, being buried and forgotten by the snow.

At this time of the year our behaviour and the way we treat our planet (our home) is more evident to me, as I see the coffee cups, cigarette packs, plastic bags and garbage strewn all over the place. I realize just how much many of us take for granted our blessed way of life. Why is it o.k. to chuck our garbage out of the car window or drop it on the streets as we walk? It’s not o.k. in my book, it’s lazy, shows bad manners and is rude, a complete lack of consideration for anyone else or for the wildlife that gets caught up in it all.

Plastic bags are really bad because they don’t break down like paper products do, and they can pose a threat to wildlife as they explore the bags and get caught up in them, sometimes causing suffocation. I applaud the church groups and all those who get out on Earth day and or the week during and pick up other people’s garbage and help make our streets clean again. But wouldn’t it be wonderful if people just learnt to take their garbage home with them and dispose of it properly?

And so as we celebrate this year, perhaps we should remind one another and our children that our neighbourhoods aren’t land fill sites, as I am reminded of the old saying “one should not sh–, where one eats”  ☺ it’s as simple as that.

Happy Birthday Taurus… ☺

Early this morning the sun moved into the sign of Taurus… whew all that energy from Aries can now slow down a bit.

Those born with the sign of Taurus are fixed earth signs, they usually have loads of patience but don’t be fooled by their “easy going” ways, they can be the most stubborn of the signs and once you have out worn their patience watch out as you see emerge a strong solid force not easy to be reckoned with.

You guys and gals are responsible, reliable, stead fast and true. Hard workers with a reputation of someone who never quits, you are practical and honest (perhaps sometimes to a fault). You are ruled by Venus who also rules Libra, and Venus loves luxury, so while you may be practical of mind you won’t say no to fine wine, good food and luxurious surroundings.

You value your space and need peace and quiet and you like to have a routine you can stick to. Thanks guys and girls for keeping us in check and working so hard to provide….you are reminded however to be careful of falling into a rut, which is easier for you guys and gals to do then most.

SGC Admin Recipes and Tips

Recipe: Scotch Shortbread Cookies

Ingredients:

 Heat Oven to 350 and have all utensils/ingredients at the ready. ☺

You will Need:

3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened: 

 1/4 cup sugar:

2 cups all-purpose flour:

Method:

Cream butter and sugar and then work in the flour. If dough is too crumbly, mix in 1-2 tbsp of butter.

Roll dough 1/2 to 1/4 inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board.

Cut into small shapes. Place 1/2 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake about 20 mins or until set. Immediately remove from baking sheet.

Makes about 2 dozen cookies

“Thoughts” Through The Eyes of a Child ☺

The Wisdom of Children ☺

“Children are an amazing inspiration. Unlike adults they are always open, and can see the beauty of the world around them just as it is.

I came home from work the other day to find a ring of rocks in the middle of my back yard with a red card glued to a popsicle stick inside. My first thought was that my daughter had made a pretend “camp fire”, but I was way off.   What I found instead was an example of the wisdom of children.

 
There in the middle of my yard were growing 4 beautiful crocus flowers. Apparently the squirrels had relocated a few of my bulbs last fall. Nothing surprising; goodness knows how many they’ve moved and eaten over the years! What did surprise me (even though it shouldn’t) was how my daughter chose to react to the situation. She circled the flowers in stone to keep them safe and made a sign to tell everyone, including our dogs, to please keep out.☺

  
I find this an incredibly beautiful and powerful act. Unlike an adult who would dig the flowers out and move them (or just run over them and not worry) my daughter chose to love and protect them just where they were. She honoured that life is precious exactly as it is without our interference. Her sign even worked. Our dogs were later spotted tearing around the yard and jumping the little shrine instead of ploughing through it. ☺
 

This little act of wonder from my four-year old got me thinking!  How often do we try to change our environment to suit ourselves? How often do we try to change people and cultures by imposing our own sets of beliefs? How much beauty and wonder are we missing by doing so?  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if instead we just appreciated the beauty and diversity of the world just as it is wherever it may be? Why should we move a flower because we would rather it grew elsewhere? Do we think we know better than the universe that through miraculous circumstance and chance placed that exact flower in that exact location? Do we think that we should, just because we can?

Perhaps we should all look to our children as a guide in how to live our lives. Enjoy beauty where you find it. Protect it but don’t interfere, and allow every flower to bloom in its own way and its own time.”

Thanks Dayle for sharing this heart warming story, it is clear that your daughter is learning from her mother to respect and cherish all living things. Children are indeed wise, and the move about their day in a simple way, and in this way they are apt to see more than we do. ☺
