Ontario Landfills are filling up ….

From the Editor:

Landfill : Digger working at landfill site Stock Photo

In our local paper this week, there was a 3 part series about the landfill situation in Ontario. And I am sure it is not just our province that is running out of room for our garbage. Why is are we in such a crisis situation?? The article mentions that  while we have a recycling program in effect, and have done for some time now, people are still throwing recycling items into the regular garbage bin.

If you look around you, you will see that for a number of years we have been what is termed as “a throw away society”. The products that we purchase don’t last very long,  most of them aren’t worth fixing, a lot are cheaper to buy new again then send out for repair, and many of us just aren’t capable of fixing things. And so they end up in our landfill’s.

There are a lot of people and we buy a lot of stuff, and it is hard sometimes to stop ourselves from buying what we don’t need, (which is a lot of stuff). Our governments want us to spend money because it helps the economy, (not sure who’s?) So it’s logically to assume space for garbage would be running out in the future… Well the future is here….

It’s a chore I know sorting our garbage, the organic bin along with one bin under the sink for glass and containers and two bins in the cupboard, one for paper and one for cardboard and there are days I get frustrated with it, but for the most part sorting the garbage in our house is second nature.

55% percent nationwide of garbage that could be recycled ends up in landfills instead: article by: Don Campbell and Thana Dharmarajah:

Batteries are a huge NO NO for the landfills and many are found.

Plastic is very bad for our environment, not only does it take ages and ages to break down (if it ever does) wildlife get caught up in it, or they eat it both can lead to death for them.

Paper comes from trees, trees clean our air and give us shade and they take time to grow, cutting them down continuously for paper seems barbaric.

Cardboard comes from paper which comes from trees.

These are just a few of the reasons why we need to be vigilant about our recycling, not only does our garbage fill up space, (that could be used for better things) we are depleting our resources at an alarming rate, we are playing with our children’s future, and we aren’t playing nice….

New Moon in Scorpio

The New moon is a good time to start new projects to put forth new ideas.

You can also think of new things you would like to accomplish in the future and begin them on the new moon of your choosing.

Things started during a new moon usually have a better outcome then those begun during any other phase of the moon.

October’s New Moon Falls on October 25th in the sign of Scorpio.

All emotional aspects are likely to be more intense than usual (even more so if you have Scorpio Sun or Moon). Heated discussions likely. Be cautious getting involved in commitments you aren’t sure about, even if it looks and sounds really good check it out first, Scorpio Moon is more than willing to assist.

Sun Moves into Scorpio October 22 2012

October 22 2012 sees the Sun moving into the Zodiac sign of Scorpio.

Scorpio: Feminine, Fixed, Water

Scorpio folk are very sensitive beings hence they feel everything most intensely.

They are fantastic detectives and great at research work, because they are happy to sift through all the information until they find what they are looking for.

Scorpio peeps can be subtle, which allows them to manipulate situations and or people towards change.

Negatively these guys and gals because they are so sensitive can struggle with feelings of jealously or obsessiveness, and can be drawn towards crisis situations and dangerous people.

Thanks to all Scorpios for their unrelenting drive and determination….

Happy Birthday to: Claire, Milton, Tyler, Diane and Jack….and to all who celebrate this Zodiac sign…. ☺

baby boy asleep

I love little babies, but boy do they poop a lot, and there are lots of babies around, which means a heck of a lot of dirty, disposable diapers end up in our land fill sites. :(

Our land fills are becoming increasingly full, and where are we supposed to get rid of our garbage once we fill up all available space?

There are alternatives to being such a disposable society, all we need is some encouragement to change our way of thinking and of course business’s that are more then happy to help us change by offering us the services we need.

One such business is www.comfycotton.ca located in Markham and serving an area from Courtice to Kitchener. The following is from their website homepage:

Comfy Cotton is a Canadian company that opened its doors in 1988 and grew to be the largest and oldest diaper service in Toronto and GTA. Located in Markham we serve communities from Courtice (east) to Stoney Creek, Kitchener (west) and from Toronto (south) to Newmarket (north).

In the 12000 square foot plant, a staff of more than 22 people process over 4,000,000 lbs. per year of soiled laundry. Laundry services are provided for the retail division, (families committed to the use of cotton diapers for their babies), and for the institutional division, a combination of Nursing Homes and Long Term Care Facilities.

  • Comfy Cotton is an expression of our commitment to babies, the environment and the communities we serve.
  • We strongly believe that cloth diapers are the healthiest, most comfortable and the fastest way for a baby to grow out of diapers.
  • Cotton diapers are the only ecologically responsible alternative to “disposable” diapers, and the best way to protect the environment your child will inherit.
  • No need for expensive landfills sites to bury the ugly reminder of our misguided sense of convenience.
Please visit their website for more information or to find out how you can get this fabulous service right at your own front door…. It’s good for baby, good for the environment and good for babies future… ☺
