Welcome Springtime!!!

Sensitivity Testing for Pollen/Dust/Mold

Those of you who have suffered in the past with environmental allergies, it is not too soon to start testing and working on getting your body ready for the spring allergy season. I am in the Whitby office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Don’t wait until you start to feel the symptoms. Enjoy this spring & summer symptom free! Remember, if you have pollen allergies you may also have food allergies and vice versa.

One of the first triggers of seasonal allergies is snow mold.

Chemical Allergies

We live in a world of continual environmental change. Most everything we come in contact with or eat contains some kind of chemical additive. Toxic and allergic chemicals are in the air and water. Many people end up at the Doctors with undiagnosed symptoms. Usually treated with some form of medication (eg.anti-depressants), when the cause could be an environmental hazard like coffee or cigarettes.
Food Additives

Most additives have the potential to cause toxic and allergic reactions. Over 90% of foods at the grocery store contain some kind of additive. The average person consuming more than 10 -15 pounds of food additives per year.
Some of these additives may have the ability to change the digestive process and cause damage to the intestinal lining.
Chemical sensitivity can produce ANY symptom in any person, at any given time. The same chemical may cause headache in one person, and joint pain in another.

Top Four Food Additives

Sulfites
Used as preservative to keep foods from turning brown (wine, beer, citrus drinks, potato chips, dried fruit, frozen items)

Yellow Dye#5
Most food dyes are known carcinogens. It is a synthetic dye derived from coal tar. It is a causative agent in bronchial asthma. Found in cheese, cake mixes, canned vegetables, chewing gum, fruit juice, puddings, salad dressings, ice cream, jams, ketchup, baked goods, wine coolers, liqueurs and much more.

BHA/BHT
Both are preservatives. Mostly found in cereals, baked goods, frozen dinners, fruit drinks, chewing gum. BHA/BHT may affect the nervous system and are known to cause behavioral problems in children. BHT has been banned from all foods in England.

MSG
Used as a flavour enhancer. Occurs in large amounts in food. Many restaurants use MSG, especially fast food. MSG causes headaches, diarrhea, blurred vision, fatigue, hot flashes, numbness of the face, sweating, and palpitations. Prolonged exposure may cause brain damage. Children are very sensitive to MSG. Other names for MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, hydrolyzed yeast, vegetable powder, or natural flavours.

As part of the food sensitivity testing that I conduct, I always test for food additives. Food additives play a large role in many unexplained symptoms. Children especially, behavioral issues are frequently caused by a high sensitivity to food additives and sugars.

It is so important to read the labels on the foods you are buying.

If you don’t like reading labels, then buy food without labels!

You Aries folk are what get us all going… ready to explore and move mountains… well for a little while at least… Even though you guys and gals are full of vim and vigour you aren’t really the kind to stick around to the see the completion of your pioneering projects thanks to your lack of patience… You can get bored easily and the next interesting thing/person that comes along can perk up your ears encouraging you to find out more….. You are fun to be around and many may wish they were more like you, but you can have your awkward moments when you forget about the feelings of others as Aries puts your own needs first…. Having a partner that understands this is important, but you need to slow down enough so that he/she can explain to you when you have done “wrong” …  You are the beginning of the Zodiac and as such you are like the child who needs a constant gentle reminder to slow down… :)

And…. March 20/21 is traditionally known as Ostara in the Pagan and Wiccan belief systems… In my reference book it shows Ostara as being today, (March 20 2014) but I am not absolutely sure as on-line it is stated as March 21 2014… Any confirmation on this years date would be greatly appreciated…. :)

Please view the following information on Ostara from About.comPaganism / Wicca

The word Ostara is just one of the names applied to the celebration of the spring equinox on March 21. The Venerable Bede said the origin of the word is actually from Eostre, a Germanic goddess of spring. Of course, it’s also the same time as the Christian Easter (Unless Easter falls in April as it does this yearcelebration, and in the Jewish faith, Passover (This year begins at sundown April 14 2014 takes place as well. For early Pagans in the Germanic countries, this was a time to celebrate planting and the new crop season. Typically, the Celtic peoples did not celebrate  Ostara as a holiday, although they were in tune with the changing of the seasons.

A New Day Begins:

A dynasty of Persian kings known as the Achaemenians celebrated the spring equinox with the festival of No Ruz — which means “new day.” It is a celebration of hope and renewal still observed today in many Persian countries, and has its roots in Zoroastrianism. In Iran, a festival called Chahar-Shanbeh Suri takes place right before No Ruz begins, and people purify their homes and leap over fires to welcome the 13-day celebration of No Ruz.

Mad as a March Hare:

Spring equinox is a time for fertility and sowing seeds, and so nature’s fertility goes a little crazy. In medieval societies in Europe, the March hare was viewed as a major fertility symbol — this is a species of rabbit that is nocturnal most of the year, but in March when mating season begins, there are bunnies everywhere all day long. The female of the species is super-fecund and can conceive a second litter while still pregnant with a first. As if that wasn’t enough, the males tend to get frustrated when rebuffed by their mates, and bounce around erratically when discouraged. (Perhaps this is where the symbol of the bunny comes from in our Easter celebrations… ) :)

Greenpeace speaks out against Resolute Canada…. Do you want the forests to stand for your children and grandchildren?

SGC Admin: From our inbox to you…. Trees do more than shade us from the sun and provide homes for birds and animals… they also clean the air we breath, taking out toxins… they are also a prime and important part of the eco-system…. We need trees and we need our forests… not only that this company “Resolute” is apparently logging trees on Native Canadian land with out their consent… hmmmm…

If you love trees and wish to leave a healthy planet for the generations to come, please consider checking out the petition link below… :)

From Greenpeace Canada….

This morning, activists and Greenpeace volunteers have transformed the iconic Mount Royal cross into a symbol of justice to contrast the destructive practices of the largest logging company in Canada, Resolute Forest Products, and the lack of protection of our public forests.

Why are we sending this message to Resolute?

Because in exploiting the Boreal Forests Resolute has infringed on the rights of First Nations without consulting them, they have threatened forest biodiversity and are now intimidating those who speak out against destructive forest practices into silence with million dollar lawsuits.

Does this sound fair to you?

We are speaking out against these attacks on the integrity of our forests and threats against our freedom of speech.

But in order to do this, we need you help. Please help us spread the word as we continue to defend the forest: share the petition #StandForForests with your family and friends on Facebook, Twitter or via email :

Book Description (from Amazon.ca)

Publication Date: Jan. 15 2013
A Fantasy Lover’s Food Guide Equal parts writer’s guide, comedy, and historical cookbook, fantasy author Krista D. Ball takes readers on a journey into the depths of epic fantasy’s obsession with rabbit stew and teaches them how to catch the blasted creatures, how to move armies across enemy territories without anyone starving to death, and what a medieval pantry should look like when your heroine is seducing the hero. Learn how long to cook a salted cow tongue, how best to serve salt fish, what a “brewis” is (hint: it isn’t beer), how an airship captain would make breakfast, how to preserve just about anything, and why those dairy maids all have ample hips. What Kings Ate will give writers of historical and fantastical genres the tools to create new conflicts in their stories, as well as add authenticity to their worlds, all the while giving food history lovers a taste of the past with original recipes and historical notes.
