Watermelon

No other fruit is more enjoyable on a hot summer day than sweet, juicy watermelon; it has an extremely high water content, approximately 92%.

Why you should add watermelon to your diet. Watermelon is a rich source of heart-healthy nutrients, such as vitamin C and the carotenoid phytonutrient, lycopene; which also provides reddish-pink watermelon with its distinctive coloration. Lycopene, along with beta-carotene and vitamin A, provides powerful antioxidant protection from the oxidative damage to cellular structures caused by free radicals. Watermelon is an ideal food not only because it is nutritious and tastes great, but also because it is low in calories: one cup of watermelon contains only 49 calories!

Summer is the time of year when its concentration of nutrients and flavor are highest and its cost is at its lowest.

Selecting a watermelon
Watermelon will not ripen after they are picked, so it is important to select a ripe watermelon in the market. If you thump a ripe watermelon it will sound like a dull thud rather than tighter ringing or hollow sound. The rind should be relatively smooth – neither overly shiny nor overly dull.

Watermelon retains its maximum amount of nutrients and it’s best taste when it is fresh.

 Watermelon Frappe

4 cups cold watermelon chunks
8 mint leaves
Run the blender at medium speed and drop chunks of watermelon through the feed hole one at a time until they are well integrated.
Add the mint and run the blender at medium speed for 1 minute until the watermelon has liquefied.
Strain into glasses, garnish with a sprig of mint and enjoy! Serves two.
                                               Watermelon-Kiwi Soup
Puree 3 cups watermelon, 1 cup cantaloupe and 1 cup kiwi fruit together. Swirl in a little plain yogurt and serve as a refreshing soup.

Lake Placid Pub and Brewery ☺

Lake Placid New York State ☺

is nestled in the Adirondack Mountains and is globally known for hosting two Olympics. It is well visited by athletes from all over, who come to practice their craft and hone their skills. The Lake Placid area is also well-known to cyclists who in my opinion are very, very brave as they cycle along the road which is also shared by motorist going  45 mph. and more. Lake Placid area is also a favorite with those who love to ride  motorcycles, it’s a pleasure to ride along the winding country roads, while being surrounded by forest, mountains and rivers. Ahhh…..

All in all Lake Placid and area(s) are pretty happening places. If you find yourself in the town of Lake Placid and you enjoy sipping on a great beer, then may we suggest you find your way to The Lake Placid Pub and BreweryWe visit this place every time we come to Lake Placid, it’s a must on our list of things to do. The staff are friendly, the food good and reasonably priced and the beer is made on the premise, full-bodied and good for you… ☺

We recommend the fish and chips with a smile, the fish is perfectly done, it’s not greasy at all with  just enough fries, “home-made” tartar sauce and “home-made” egg & potato salad all for $10:00… ☺

On the Beer front, Ubu is the brand hubby and I enjoy, named after the owner’s much-loved and adored chocolate lab. ☺ The brewery has many different beers on tap and if you aren’t sure which one to order, ask for the samplers, 6 (I think) little glasses of different beers all for you to sample.

This summer we tried Bruce’s Brown Bag Ale and I must say it’s my new favorite, a dark beer, that is smooth going down without a hint of bitterness, actually I would say it’s perfect. We even purchased a jug of it to enjoy back at our campsite… ☺ The Jugs are great as they are only $13:00 to purchase and $10:00 to refill… ☺

You can purchase Lake Placid Brewery’s  regular  (all season)brands in grocery stores and pharmacies too if you can’t make it to the pub…
