Ocean Life at Risk of Extinction:

There are many people who don’t believe that Climate Change is something to worry about, partly because it’s hard to believe, I mean who wants to believe that our way of life may potentially be the cause of so many upheavals within nature.

Dr. David Suzuki has been warning us for decades about the effects that our continued way of life will have upon the planet, and sadly his forecasts are coming true.

Our Oceans have been a source of life for many species upon this planet including humans since the beginning of time, yet we refuse to treat what we have with respect, we continue to believe that like everything else on this planet the Ocean and everything in it is ours for the taking.

If you have any questions about our impact on our Environment, please visit David’s Suzuki’s website, there is sure to be someone to contact who will be happy to assist.

“OSLO (Reuters) – Life in the oceans is at imminent risk of the worst spate of extinctions in millions of years due to threats such as climate change and over-fishing, a study showed on Tuesday.

Time was running short to counter hazards such as a collapse of coral reefs or a spread of low-oxygen “dead zones,” according to the study led by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO). “We now face losing marine species and entire marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, within a single generation,” according to the study by 27 experts to be presented to the United Nations. “Unless action is taken now, the consequences of our activities are at a high risk of causing, through the combined effects of climate change, over-exploitation, pollution and habitat loss, the next globally significant extinction event in the ocean,” it said.

Scientists list five mass extinctions over 600 million years — most recently when the dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago, apparently after an asteroid struck. Among others, the Permian period abruptly ended 250 million years ago.

“The findings are shocking,” Alex Rogers, scientific director of IPSO, wrote of the conclusions from a 2011 workshop of ocean experts staged by IPSO and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at Oxford University.

Fish are the main source of protein for a fifth of the world’s population and the seas cycle oxygen and help absorb carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas from human activities. OXYGEN Jelle Bijma, of the Alfred Wegener Institute, said the seas faced a “deadly trio” of threats of higher temperatures, acidification and lack of oxygen, known as anoxia, that had featured in several past mass extinctions.

A build-up of carbon dioxide, blamed by the U.N. panel of climate scientists on human use of fossil fuels, is heating the planet. Absorbed into the oceans, it causes acidification, while run-off of fertilizers and pollution stokes anoxia. “From a geological point of view, mass extinctions happen overnight, but on human timescales we may not realize that we are in the middle of such an event,” Bijma wrote.

The study said that over-fishing is the easiest for governments to reverse — countering global warming means a shift from fossil fuels, for instance, toward cleaner energies such as wind and solar power. “Unlike climate change, it can be directly, immediately and effectively tackled by policy change,” said William Cheung of the University of East Anglia. “Over-fishing is now estimated to account for over 60 percent of the known local and global extinction of marine fishes,” he wrote. Among examples of over-fishing are the Chinese bahaba that can grow 2 meters long. Prices per kilo (2.2 lbs) for its swim bladder — meant to have medicinal properties — have risen from a few dollars in the 1930s to $20,000-$70,000.”

New Moon June 1: Full Moon June 15th

This months new moon occurs June 1st in the sign of Gemini. Gemini is all about communication and multi-tasking and with the moon in this position it is likely we will want to chat a bit more than usual and do more. We may find ourselves restless, perhaps not sleeping well or finding we are happy to get up early and see what the day brings. This proves to be a fabulous time for letter writing, emails, phone calls and short trips. Even if the short trip is a visit to your local store, it’s likely to be a productive one. The biggest challenge with this New moon will be in trying to keep your feet on the ground. ☺

June’s Full Moon falls on the 15th of the month, in the earthy sign of Capricorn. Practical, organized and businesslike the Capricorn full moon brings out our sense of duty, and can encourage the more pessimistic, cautious side of our personality to come to fore front.  Future goals may become more important making this a great time to act responsibly taking care of any business that needs taking care of. A good time to set down ground rules, limitations and guide  lines. The Challenge with the Capricorn Full Moon is a tendency to act more business like than human, perhaps unwittingly upsetting others without realizing the emotional scarring that may remain behind.

June 1 also sees a Solar Eclipse:

June 15th also sees a Lunar Eclipse:

Late June 14th (11:31pm) to Early hours of June 15th (1:59) am: The moon will be Void off Course until she moves into the sign of Capricorn. During this time our emotions will be harder to understand. Caution is advised in all emotional dealings.

Chelsea Update May 31 2011

Chelsea

Chelsea, as this poster indicates has now been away from home for the past 4 months. She is extremely thin and it is likely she is in need of immediate medical attention.

It is not fully understood why Chelsea continues to roam, but it is likely she is a very confused animal and reuniting her with her family remains the only option. If you have been following the progress of this search, now turned rescue effort it is likely you are as amazed as I am at the amount of love everyone on Team Chelsea has for Chelsea.

It seems Chelsea has chosen her roaming area, which means she does not stay in one place at any given time. This makes the rescue of her more difficult as no one can ever be sure as to where Chelsea will choose to stay. The members of Team Chelsea have a set roster which includes both night and day “watchings”.

However no one can be in all of the Chelsea sighting area’s all the time, and this is where we come in. Those who live, work or visit within the target area are being asked to please, please keep an open eye for Chelsea, and if you see her to please call one of the numbers listed immediately. It ‘s a good idea to pop the numbers in your cell phone if you feel comfortable doing so, this way as soon as you sight Chelsea you can call it in. It is imperative that a member is contacted regarding the sighting ASAP, as mentioned previously Chelsea moves around and can be gone from the sighted location very quickly, time therefore is of the essence.

Team Chelsea is appreciative and very grateful for all the continued help.

Target Area is as Follows:

Pringle Creek

South of Taunton

North of Dundas

East of Brock

West of Thickson

Area’s where Chelsea has been sighted:

Sidewalk, streets, ravines, hydro corridors, green spaces, under decks and in sheds or sheltered places in the yard.

Remember: Chelsea’s mental state is not known, she is probably hungry so please use care if you do sight her and refrain from trying to restrain her. If Chelsea appears friendly or comfortable with you she may choose to come to you. Caution is advised at all times.

Bulefin Tuna: Numbers are dwindling: David Suzuki

FYI From Science Matters by David Suzuki:

Visit The David Suzuki Foundation  for all things planet friendly. Find out what you can do. ☺

“The bluefin tuna is large, fast, tasty, and rare. For those reasons, it’s highly prized by both commercial and sports fishers. The Atlantic bluefin often sells for more than $1,000 a kilogram. That’s pushed the fish even closer to the brink of extinction.

The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada recently recommended that the western Atlantic population of bluefin tuna be listed as endangered. The bluefin joins salmon, rockfish, sharks, loggerhead sea turtles, Atlantic cod, and many others on the list of at-risk marine species in Canada. Fishing was identified as a key factor in the decline of all these species. Sadly, government and industry appear to be in denial. Our Atlantic bluefin tuna fishery is the best-managed fishery of its kind in the world today,” a Department of Fisheries and Oceans official said in response to the recommendation.

An industry representative claimed that listing bluefin tuna under Canada’s Species at Risk Act would be “just another nail in the coffin” for Atlantic fishermen. DFO opinion regarding the bluefin tuna fishery is featured on its “Sustainable Fish and Seafood” web page, with links to a series of government-funded promotional videos on the tuna. The bluefin that visit Canadian waters during summer are primarily large, mature fish that spawn in the Gulf of Mexico in May. They are caught mostly around Prince Edward Island and southwest Nova Scotia. Recent estimates show the population of spawning bluefin at around 66,000, the lowest on record, down from more than 265,000 in the 1970s.

The U.S. also targets these fish, but the government there at least admits on its website that bluefin is overfished. The U.S. is considering listing it as endangered under its Endangered Species Act. The Americans have also made other moves to protect the fish. A fishery that targets other species but that hooks bluefin tuna incidentally as bycatch must use “weak hooks” that straighten when a large bluefin is caught, allowing it to escape. Ironically, while the U.S. government is trying to figure out ways to let large bluefins escape and survive, the Canadian government is creating videos that promote capturing them.”

Outdoor Potting Soil A Fire Hazard??

Gosh who would have thought it?? Potting soil, yep the dirt we use to plant our flowers and veg with can be dangerous.

According to Whitby Fire and Emergency Services, certain types of potting soil combined with dry planters can ignite catching on fire. The risk is increased for deck and patio (balcony?) fires during July and August, as these are generally the hottest and driest times of summer. Planters in these locations can dry out quickly becoming a potential fire hazard.

Remember to have someone check and water your outdoor plants and planters when you go away during the summer months… ☺

Whitby fire prevention officer Terry VonZuben educates us with his statement.

Today’s potting soil and fertilizers contain less dirt and more organic matter like shredded wood, bark, peat moss, styrofoam and vermiculite. These Substances are combustible if allowed to dry out. Ensure this soil type is kept hydrated. For plants requiring direct sunlight, choose an alternative soil such as triple mix”

Mr VonZuben also advises NOT to use planters as ashtrays, cigarettes can cause the combustibles to ignite.
