NWHM Celebrates Women’s Equality Day

Suffrage parade in New York, May 6, 1912: Wikipedia

The National Women’s History Museum (NWHM) celebrates Women’ s Equality Day on August 26, with the release of a video that explores the 72-year struggle of American women to achieve suffrage. The Suffrage movement spanned seven decades and culminated in the passage of the 19th Amendment, which enfranchised all women on August 26, 1920.

The video explores many of the pillars within the Suffrage Movement, including Angelina and Sarah Grimke, Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The video also documents Western states that led the way and won the vote well before passage of the 19th Amendment.

NWHM honors our foremothers on whose shoulders we stand, those who had the courage and tenacity to fight the 72-year movement that enfranchised more people than any other effort in U.S. History.

The National Women’s History Museum, founded in 1996, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational institution dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the diverse historic contributions of women and integrating this rich heritage fully into our nation’s history. Until legislation passes in Congress designating a site for a permanent museum in Washington, D.C., the NWHM promotes women’s history through its preview and temporary exhibits, special events, On-line Museum and online educational materials (www.nwhm.org).
