What’s it about: Join our Library Archivist, Sarah Ferencz, in this interactive Remembrance Day program. The presentation beginning at 7:00 p.m. View two of our archival collections based on the First and Second World Wars: Participants will have the opportunity to examine letters from a Whitby soldier in the First World War as well as records from a local group working in the home front during the Second World War. Local resident, Steve Gusterson, will also be displaying his amazing collection of military paraphernalia, including helmets, gas masks, ephemera, weapons, and uniforms.

What’s it all about: In This 3 hour workshop, Fern Wolf will teach you how to transform subconscious beliefs that stem the flow of health, abundance and success in your life. Fern will be sharing her most effective tools for transforming the limited beliefs held in our subconscious mind. This event is hosted by Donna Wiggers of Natural Wellness Solutions.
Donna will be out of the country for January, February and March of 2015. She is still accepting appointments up until the end of December 2014 for services relating to Natural Solutions.
This year, for the first time in Pass the Book history, we want YOU to choose the Pass the Book title.
On November 1 we will announce a shortlist of librarian-nominated titles, and you’ll get a chance to vote for the book that YOU think should be the Pass the Book title. Voting will be open until December 8, and the winning title will be announced on Family Literacy Day, January 27, 2015. So, tell all your bibliophile friends and family members! And make sure you visit the Pass the Book website on November 1 to see the nominees and to choose the title YOU think the community should read. You can also vote in person at any Whitby Public Library location.
Pass the Book, a community-wide reading program, is a unique, creative collaboration between Durham Region public libraries that partners with writers, businesses and not-for-profit organizations. Pass the Book is designed to foster discussion and community through the promotion of art, literature, and culture. The program encourages the community to read and discuss one book and to attend programs related to the book’s themes.
Late Fall Storytime Registration
In-person registration for the late fall session of our preschool storytimes begins at all our branches on Wednesday, October 29 at 9:30 am (at the Central Library) and 10:00 am (at the Brooklin and Rossland branches).
Babytime, Toddler Time and Stories for Threes and Fours will be held at each of our branches. See our Programs and Events web page for branch-specific dates and times.
Did You Know? The Minecraft Server is at the Brooklin Branch
The Brooklin Branch now has a Minecraft Server on all of the children’s computer stations. MinecraftEdu is an educational remix of the original smash hit game Minecraft, played by over 30 million people worldwide.
Minecraft is not just a game about breaking blocks, it’s also a game of survival, creativity, adventure, and exploration. To play Minecraft using the server, visit the Brooklin Branch and log in to a children’s computer station using your library card number.

Read With Me at the Central Library

Join us in November at the Central Library when staff from an Ontario Early Years Centre will hold a special Read With Me program on Wednesday mornings. Children from birth to 12 months and their caregivers are invited to join us for songs and stories.

Senior Social Wednesdays at the Rossland Branch

Seniors of all ages are invited to join us on Wednesdays for an hour of meeting new friends while crafting, learning, discussing, enjoying board and Wii games, participating in book chats and listening to guest speakers.
Each session has a theme, which on Wednesday, November 5 is Camp X. Can you pass basic training at Camp X? Find out with our Camp X board game, and test your knowledge of local history.
Every November we celebrate all things mysterious with visits from some of the best mystery writers in Canada. We call this celebration November Noir, and this year we are looking forward to our visit with Suzanne Kingsmill, author of the Cordi O’Callaghan mysteries, which are about a zoologist who finds herself solving murders.
Kingsmill will join us on Thursday, November 27 at 7:00 pm, and our good friend Susanna Kearsley will act as host and interviewer. Stay tuned to our Programs & Events web page for upcoming details on how you can register for this event.

Never Laugh as a Hearse Goes By by Elizabeth Duncan isn’t exactly new (it was published in 2013) but it’s still worth a read. Amateur sleuth Penny Brannigan is attending a conference at the Gladstone Library in North Wales when the bishop’s secretary is found poisoned. Mysteriousness ensues.
No Known Grave by Maureen Jennings is the third in her World War Two series about Detective Inspector Tom Tyler. In this latest outing, Tyler has to investigate when a double murder takes place at a convalescent hospital. It blends mystery with a portrait of wartime Britain.
Stranglehold by local author Robert Rotenberg is set in Toronto. Detective Ari Greene finds the tables turned when he himself is accused of murder. Filled with twists and unexpected surprises, Stranglehold is a page turner.
Up in Smoke by Ross Pennie is the latest in the series featuring Public Health Investigator Dr. Zol Szabo. In this story, Szabo and his team fear an epidemic when teens at a high school in tobacco country start dying of unexplained liver failure. Up in smoke, indeed.

Get Essay Help with Literature Resource Centre
Ah, the English essay. Or as it’s often known today, the English ISU. Students are asked to discuss themes, irony, pathos, foreshadowing and other concepts beloved of English teachers everywhere in the context of an assigned novel or other literary work. How does Shakespeare portray women in Macbeth? What are the parallels between Soviet totalitarianism and Animal Farm? Explain the concepts of good and evil as presented in To Kill a Mockingbird. Conrad, Shelley, Lord of the Flies…it can all be a little overwhelming.
That’s where our Literature Reference Centre (LRC) database can help. LRC is a great resource for all things literary: novels, plays, poems, screenplays and much more. You’ll find great overviews and summaries of well-known works, author biographies, reviews, interviews and something called “literary criticism.” Literary criticism includes, among other things, essays on some of the themes mentioned above. So if you’re at your wits end trying to explain how the conch represents civilization in Lord of the Flies, give LRC a try.

Whitby Archives Snapped from the Past
This November the Whitby Archives will be presenting at the Brooklin and Rossland branches in commemoration of Remembrance Day. Learn about Whitby soldier Cullen Hay Perry (pictured) who diligently wrote letters home to his mother in Whitby during the First World War. You’ll also learn about a group of young women who were determined to knit socks for every local serviceman and servicewoman during the Second World War. These programs are not to be missed!
