SGC Admin: Alzheimer and Dementia are probably two of the most difficult situations a family has to work through and when a loved one first develops such a condition it can be almost undetectable. The Alzheimer Society of Durham Region shares the Ten early warning signs, and encourages everyone to ask questions of their health care providers should they have concerns about themselves or their loved ones.
Reading through the signs, some of them could relate to stress, everyday living, changes in environment (such as retiring). However, it is better to be safe then sorry, and the sooner diagnosis can be made the sooner treatment can begin, if caught early the chances of a better quality of life for the patient is expected.

Ten Warning Signs:
- Memory loss that affects day-to-day abilities
- Difficulty performing familiar tasks such as preparing a meal
- Problems with language, such as forgetting words
- Disorientation in time and space, such as not knowing what day of the week it is
- Impaired judgement, such as wearing light clothing on a cold day
- Problems with abstract thinking
- Misplacing things or putting things in strange places
- Changes in mood and behaviour
- Changes in personality
- Loss of initiative, losing interest in friends, family and favourite activities…
