Durham Residents are being asked to be vigilant regarding mosquitoes.  Please remember to empty all places water may have collected after a rain storm. Mosquitoes use stagnant water to lay their eggs, even a little bit of water is enough.

Mosquitoes spread the West Nile Virus. Samples recently collected July 24.   from permanent mosquito traps in Ajax and Oshawa have tested positive for the virus.  

The virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquito’s become infected by feeding upon the blood of a bird that carries the virus. The disease is not spread from person to person, nor form bird to person. 

Symptoms: (Usual)

Fever, Headache, Body Ache, Nausea, Vomiting, Rash on chest, stomach or back. 

Symptoms: (Rare)

Muscle Weakness, Stiff Neck, Confusion, Tremors, Numbness and Sensitivity to light. 

Symptoms usually develop between 2 and 15 days after being bitten.
